If you've seen hemp-derived THC gummies online or in stores and wondered what exactly you're looking at, you're not alone.
Are they THC? Are they hemp? Are they the same thing as other THC edibles?
Let's make it simple.
first things first: yes, they're thc
Hemp-derived THC gummies are edible products containing THC that is derived from hemp.
And yes—THC is still THC.
Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, better known as delta-9 THC, is one of the major cannabinoids found in cannabis and is responsible for cannabis's intoxicating effects.
The word hemp-derived describes the source. It doesn't mean the delta-9 THC is a completely different cannabinoid.
We broke this down in more detail in our guide, is hemp-derived delta-9 thc actually thc?
so what makes something "hemp-derived"?
This is where things get a little confusing.
Under the federal definition established by the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp is cannabis—and its derivatives—with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight.
That distinction removed qualifying hemp from the federal Controlled Substances Act. However, that did not eliminate other federal regulation of products made from hemp, and state laws governing hemp-derived THC products can differ.
So when you see hemp-derived delta-9 THC, you're seeing THC sourced from cannabis that falls within the legal definition of hemp—not a pretend version of THC.
what makes a thc gummy different from other thc products?
The biggest difference is simply the format.
A gummy is an edible, meaning the THC is consumed rather than inhaled.
That matters because edible THC doesn't behave exactly like inhaled cannabis. Effects can take longer to appear and can last longer than someone expects. The CDC notes that edible cannabis products can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to produce intoxicating effects.
That's one reason knowing the number of milligrams in your gummy matters.
how much thc is in a gummy?
There isn't one universal THC dose for gummies.
Different products can contain very different amounts of THC per serving, which is why we believe the number on the package matters more than whether something simply says "THC gummy."
At sam after hours, our gummy lineup intentionally includes different strengths:
🍑 stay awhile
soft peach bellini
8 mg delta-9 THC
🍒 settle in
shirley temple cherry pop
10 mg delta-9 THC
🍏 say less
appletini sour apple
20 mg delta-9 THC
That gives you the ability to actually know what you're choosing instead of treating every THC gummy like it's interchangeable.
how do you choose a hemp-derived thc gummy?
Start with the label.
Look for:
-
the amount of THC per serving
-
the suggested serving size
-
the type of THC or cannabinoids included
-
an ingredient list
-
third-party laboratory testing
-
a certificate of analysis (COA)
Your experience can also vary based on dose, tolerance, previous cannabis experience, whether you've eaten, and whether you're consuming other substances.
More isn't automatically better.
If you're new to THC, understanding the dosage before eating the gummy is especially important. Because edibles can take a while to kick in, taking more simply because you "don't feel it yet" can result in consuming much more THC than you intended.
why does third-party testing matter?
A package can tell you what's supposed to be inside.
Testing helps verify what's actually there.
Independent laboratory testing can provide information about cannabinoid content and may also test for certain contaminants, depending on the testing performed.
At sam after hours, our products are third-party tested, and we make our certificates of analysis available so you can see the results yourself.
Because knowing what you're consuming shouldn't require guesswork.
are hemp-derived thc gummies intoxicating?
They can be.
THC is the cannabinoid primarily responsible for cannabis's intoxicating effects. A hemp-derived product isn't automatically non-intoxicating simply because the word hemp appears on the package.
That's another reason we talk so much about dosage.
Someone consuming 1 mg of THC is making a very different dosage choice than someone consuming 20 mg.
the bottom line 🌿
Hemp-derived THC gummies are real THC edibles.
"Hemp-derived" tells you about the source of the THC. "Gummy" tells you how you're consuming it.
The important questions are what's actually in the product, how much THC you're consuming, whether it has been independently tested, and whether the product is appropriate for you.
The goal isn't to make THC complicated.
It's to give you enough information to make an informed choice—and then find your after hours.
